learning real skills

So at this point, you may be asking what skills can you learn in an entrepreneurship class? Aren’t entrepreneurs born not made?

Let’s dispel the second question before we dig into the first. Because this second question is a completely dysfunctional myth that exists to lionize successful founders and to build a moat around entrepreneurship, keeping it only for the select few. We are here to tell you entrepreneurship is for everyone. It is not a scarce resource. It is abundant. The more successful new businesses and non-profits we have the better - the better for founders, the better for their communities and families, and the better for our overall economy.

As for the skills you learn in an entrepreneurship workshop, they are many. Let me name but a few:

  • Analytical thinking & innovation

  • Complex problem solving

  • Failure resilience

  • Creativity, originality & initiative

  • Team building and developing interpersonal and social skills

  • Perspective taking

  • Conflict resolution

  • Emotional and mental resilience

  • Active learning & learning strategies

  • Persuasive writing & communication skills

  • Networking and network development

  • Financial planning

  • Digital marketing and strategic use of social media to promote a product or service

  • Storytelling, persuasive pitching, and public speaking

Plus, there are lasting, long-term benefits to teaching entrepreneurial skills, including but not limited to:

  1. Greater confidence in herself and her abilities

  2. Creative problem-solving skills that she can bring into her classroom, friend group, and life

  3. Greater confidence in collaborating with others and in public speaking

  4. Making meaningful decisions about her future

  5. Greater confidence in herself and her ability to make her dreams come true!
